What Is Mediation?

Mediation is an efficient and cost-effective process for helping parties reach agreement and resolve disputes. This non-adversarial approach takes conflicts outside the legal arena into a private and confidential setting. In a comfortable environment conducive to identifying needs, airing concerns, and solving problems, mediation provides an appealing alternative to litigation, offering distinct benefits:

  • Creative, Comprehensive, and Workable Solutions
  • Cost Efficiency
  • Stress Reduction
  • Confidentiality
  • Demonstration of Good Faith
  • Control of Decision-Making
  • Long-lasting Agreements

At the Centre for Mediation & Dispute Resolution, an experienced mediator works with the parties in structuring an equitable settlement. As an independent and impartial facilitator, the mediator is actively engaged in problem-solving. Participants become involved in shaping an agreement that is uniquely suited to their needs and circumstances. The non-adversarial nature of mediation is especially appropriate for parties in the kind of ongoing relationships found in the workplace and the family.

“Mediation was a place where we were equal and respected. My voice mattered. His voice mattered. And our concerns were heard.”

“Going through mediation and divorce was one of the most difficult and emotional times of my life. I am thankful that my husband and I were adult enough to face one another and come to a mutual agreement. Through the process we each had to give and take which will enable us to continue to be able to come up with future negotiations later. As parents we will have to be in contact with one another for many years – they should be happy and good.”

“I am grateful to mediation for giving me a new beginning. I have a new, old house, which looks different from anything I ever had before. I have new friends, a new life, and I’m a new me.”

As increasing numbers of people select mediation, it has become obvious that mediation can and does work. Settlements are reached, neither party feels “taken,” and agreements last. Mediation is not easy. It requires participation and engagement. You will be asked to verbalize your thoughts and express your feelings while also listening to others. The benefits are worth the effort.

  • Structure your own agreement, unique to your needs and circumstances
  • Ensure a comprehensive and creative agreement in which present and future concerns are incorporated
  • Protect your privacy and confidentiality while demonstrating good faith
  • Save time and money
  • Minimize hostility, competitiveness, and anxiety
  • Improve communications and problem-solving techniques in interpersonal situations

The solution is to find a forum which provides a level playing field for discussing your concerns and needs so you can begin to address the myriad issues with which you are faced. At CMDR, we do just that.
